Half-Square Triangle Quilt Tutorial
This quilt is made from 1,024 squares, all 2 1/2", resulting in a quilt that finishes around 64" square.
Half of the "squares" in the quilt are half-square triangle (HST) blocks, and half are just 2 1/2" squares of background fabric.
**Note: I made this quilt using mostly scraps. It is a great way to use up trimmings from larger HST or flying geese blocks (or really any block that might have cut off right-triangle pieces).**

A Note on Making HST Blocks
I make my 2 1/2" HST blocks by using a 3 1/2" piece of colored fabric, and a 3 1/2" piece of background (low-volume) fabric, placed right-sides together. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the other, and then sew 1/4" from each side of that drawn line. Cut on the line, and then open your blocks, press and trim to 2 1/2" square.  Using this method each pair of colored fabric + background fabric gives you two HST blocks.

Quilty Math

You will need the following:
- 256 pieces of colored fabric cut 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
- 256 pieces of background (low-volume) fabric cut 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
- 512 pieces of background (low-volume) fabric cut 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

Quilt Layout
I laid out my quilt by alternating my HST blocks with squares of background fabric. I took care to try to orient all of my HST randomly (not all facing any direction, or creating any repeated patterns).  Again, I used "net" or "web" piecing to assemble all of my blocks relatively easily.  Please google those terms if you aren't familiar with them.
*Note: For the purpose of this tutorial I made the above graphic using Electric Quilt (EQ8). In order to do that I had to create a "block" that I laid out in a grid, and that caused way more repitition and repeated patterns than my actual quilt has.*
